Art Therapy:

When words are not enough.

Sometimes you may have difficulty finding words to express how you feel.  Your feelings may be beyond words. Words alone cannot begin to touch upon feelings that are confusing, intense, compounding or conflicting. Wiithout being able to express your feelings, you are left feeling frustrated, overwhelmed and futility sets in.

There is another way to express your feelings.

Art making opens up a new channel for release, giving order and shaping new meaning from your feelings.

And you don't have to know how to make art to benefit from art therapy.

Imagining, creating and making are innate abilities found in everyone.  Not a day goes by where you are trying to make meaning of your surroundings and your circumstances for your survival, describing your thoughts and ideas with simile and metaphors or wondering how your life could be different or better.

You make a simple, almost effortless stroke of firey red paint across the canvas to represent your anger from feeling hurt.  You want the pain to stop.  So you sketch a bold green circle outside the red to represent your personal boundary.  The red paint stops there.  You reach for some clay and wedge it,  pounding, pressing and pushing out what angered you while letting out pent up frustration. You then calmly make a symbol of empowerment from your clay for yourself. With a deep sigh, feelings that were once held back are now released.

You feel relief.

What was depressed is now expressed.

In art therapy simple gestures and colors represent thoughts and emotions projecting what is internal, outwardly.  You express your emotions with colors, basic shapes and form.  You admire the art you made with its simplest stroke--image and line.  It's not how asthetically pleasing your art is that matters. It's not art to be critiqued, put on walls in a gallery or displayed on a fancy coffee table.  The art you make is for your eyes only and matters because you made it to show how you feel.  The canvas becomes the projector screen for what your soul has finally been able to release.

Now you can see how you feel.

How you feel starts to make sense.

The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" rings true.  Your feelings are no longer constricted to simple sentences, but are now orchestrated with rich and vast layered ideas, thoughts, feelings composed so easily.   You have given shape and form to what was once confusing or overwhelming and now your feelings have new meaning.  You now have a better understanding for why you feel the way you do.

Your art is a representation of how you feel.

Unlike talk therapy where words are fleeting, in art therapy, the artwork remains constant holding your experience continuously well after your session has ended.  Your feelings now have shape, form and dimension.  They are made with color, symbols, lines and gestures that are deeply personal to you.  Well after you have made your art, it continues to reveal new meaning and...

You continue to feel seen and heard.

You feel validated.
